Y!Q Beta
Search in context

Using Y!Q in Firefox

The Y!Q Greasemonkey script makes it easy to perform a contextual search in Firefox, from any page on the Web. Once you have installed the script, just select any text on the page you're browsing, and the Y!Q actuator icon will appear. Click the icon, and the Y!Q overlay will open, displaying search results related to the text you selected.

Steps:
  1. If you haven't already installed Greasemonkey, go to the Greasemonkey site and follow the instructions there to install it. After installing it, you'll need to restart Firefox.
  2. Once you have Greasemonkey installed, right-click this link and choose Install User Script.... Click OK in the dialog that appears, and the Y!Q Greasemonkey script will be installed.
  3. Browse to any Web page (or simply refresh this page) and select some text — anything from a sentence to a few paragraphs generally yields the best results. The Y!Q actuator icon will appear. Click the icon, and the Y!Q overlay will open, displaying search results related to the text you selected.

A few notes:

  • When you install the Y!Q Greasemonkey script, it won't immediately take effect on any pages that are already loaded into a Firefox window or tab — you need to browse to a new page, or refresh an already-loaded page, to see Y!Q in action.
  • Due to browser security features, the Y!Q overlay will open in its own miniature Firefox window if you are browsing a non-Yahoo! site. On Yahoo! sites, it will open on a new layer in the current window.
  • The Y!Q Greasemonkey script now supports both Firefox 1.0 (via Greasemonkey 0.5) and Firefox 1.5 (via Greasemonkey 0.6).
